What is the fastest growing oak tree and the fasted growing fruit bearing tree on this list?
There are 3 fast growing oaks. Possum Oak, Q. nigra, is the fastest, but I am not sure you want it. I have one so I can speak from experience. It is somewhat weak-wooded for an oak and is always shedding branches. The next two fastest are the Scarlet Oak (Q. coccinea) and the Willow Oak (Q. phellos). Both will do 1-2 feet per year which is fast for an oak. I don’t personally know the former, but I do know that the Willow Oak is a highly regarded tree. If you live near Johnson City, TN, the city has made some extensive use of them.
As to fruit trees, I am not sure if you mean fruit that you want to eat or fruit for wildlife. The best tree for you, if you don’t mind a medium growth rate, is the Pawpaw (Asimina triloba). If you don’t mind seedlings popping up all over your property, the fruit from our fast-growing native cherry trees (Prunus) makes a good jelly if you use lots of sugar. The American Red Plum (Prunus americana) is fast-growing, although you might need to spray it to assure fruit is not damaged by insects. I hope this helps.
Just seeing your reply now. Thanks for the information
Why is Shellbark Hickory not included in this list?
Thank you for catching the fact that we missed this species! It is definitely native to Tennessee and is available commercially. We will add it to the database.
