Goldenrod identification can be tricky and especially with this species which has up to 5 different varieties causing variation in the size, leaf and flower description. Although it is a handsome species with showy flowers, it is probably the most aggressive member of the goldenrod family. Native to the U.S., it has become a serious invasive pest in much of Europe, large parts of Asia, Australia and New Zealand. It can rapidly colonize an area by creeping rhizomes and self-seeding. It is also allelopathic meaning that the plant releases chemicals that inhibit the growth of other plants around it. Found mostly on abandoned farmlands, pastures, fields, thickets, prairies, waste areas and along roadsides. Although it is available commercially and the best use would be in naturalized areas or meadows, it is rarely recommended for native plantings.
