Buying Native Plants

Purchasing Tennessee Native Plants and Seeds

It is often difficult to find Tennessee native plants at local garden centers so we would like to help our visitors by providing a list of mail-order nurseries on our website that specialize in native plants.  We are also listing Tennessee nurseries that specialize in native plants but do not do mail order in case you happen to live within driving distance of one of these businesses.

The mail-order list is divided into two groups—nurseries located in Tennessee and nurseries located east of the Mississippi River in states other than Tennessee.  When purchasing Tennessee native plants, it is desirable to try to purchase from a nursery that is breeding strains of a plant species that occur naturally in Tennessee.  However, this goal is often not possible due to a shortage of suppliers, and it is certainly appropriate to buy plant species that are native to Tennessee but were grown in other states.  If you wish to purchase only plants native to Tennessee, keep in mind that these out-of-state nurseries will be selling plants native to their area as well; some plants may not be native to Tennessee.  As always, use our native plant list as a reference if you have any questions.

We have recently added a new category — nurseries that sell native Tennessee mosses.  This list includes locations across the U.S.

Our lists are for informational purposes only and are not intended to convey a recommendation for a specific source.  If you have complaints on a specific nursery, please refrain from posting them on this page.  A great alternative is The Garden Watchdog at Dave’s Garden website where over 7,600 mail-order gardening companies are listed, ranked and reviewed by customers.  You can find it at http://davesgarden.com.

Because I garden specifically for monarchs and other pollinators I need to give a big shout out to Terri and Mike down at GroWild Inc.for all their knowledge and assistance these past few years. Yes, call ahead!
Also, while somewhat limited in native selections, http://www.mysummerfieldfarm.com/ sells various milkweed plants and you can find them around Greeneville or Johnson City markets if not right at the farm. Plants you can trust not to have been doused in chemicals that will kill either the monarchs or their larvae.

One of my favorite native plant nurseries is Tennessee Naturescapes, 2131 Oliver Springs Highway, Clinton, TN 37716. They have expanded quite a bit in the past year. I believe they sell online as well as at the nursery. They are on Facebook as well. I would highly recommend them. http://www.tennesseenaturescapes.com/

The Native Plant Rescue Squad in Knoxville, TN. The members of this volunteer-staffed non-profit descend on landscapes and sites that are about to be developed and rescue native plants before the bulldozers show up. They sell these plants at the Downtown farmer’s market and provide educational information too.
Over the last two years, I’ve bought so many lovely ferns from them including a broad beech fern, a couple of ebony worts, a Christmas fern, and a lush cinnamon fern rescued from the Knoxville Zoo.
To use a terrible but thematic pun: Wort’s not to like?
    Please do list them.
    Their website is https://www.nativeplantrescuesquad.com/
