New York Fern, Tapering Fern

New York Fern, Tapering Fern Thelypteris noveboracensis 1-2 feet tall by 1-2 feet spread. Dappled shade to medium shade; medium to moderately dry moisture level; humus-rich or rocky soil; mildly acidic to neutral pH. Maintenance: Medium Growth/Colonizing Habit: Creeping rootstocks send up fronds, sometimes forming a dense groundcover. Can spread quite rapidly. Dense colonies can crowd out other plants, although the species seems to be less aggressive in its southern ranges. Drier soil will slow the spread. Can divide and separate if it becomes too aggressive. Foliage: Deciduous Native Region: Statewide Attractive, yellow-green, soft fern with twice cut, thin foliage that gives a rather fine texture and translucent quality to the plant. Place in a location protected from prevailing winds.
