Full to part sun, moderately dry to dry moisture, sandy soil, prefers soils rich in calcium carbonate which are typically alkaline pH.   1-2 feet height, yellow flowers, blooms in fall.

Native Region:  Occurs in most counties in Middle and East Tennessee

Handsome, columnar shaped plant branching from a single stalk with flower heads spiraling around the flowering stem.  One plant can produce as many as 350 small flower heads.  Foliage and stem may turn burgundy colored in fall.  Occurs naturally on roadsides, old fields, and grass-covered hill tops.  Attracts birds, bees and butterflies.  Many butterfly and moth caterpillars feed on the leaves.
